Shebar Law is owned by Steve Shebar, who has been a multi-state licensed attorney since 1992. He started his own firm after practicing law for over a decade with two top-tier international corporate law firms, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, and the largest record company in the world at the time, Universal Music Group.

Shebar Law handles business and personal matters encompassing the following general areas:

  • Commercial/business litigation, including prosecuting and defending contract, licensing, employment, trademark and copyright infringement cases.

  • Transactional law, i.e., negotiating and drafting business contracts, including purchase and sale, vendor, employment, shareholder (Inc.) and operating (LLC), intellectual property licensing, entertainment and other service contracts.

  • Personal matters, including, property disputes, orders of protection, discrimination/civil rights cases.

Attorney-at-Law

Steven Michael Shebar

Steve attended Columbia University (1976-78) and City University of New York (1986-88), from which he received his B.A. magna cum laude, with a double-major in music and sociology. In the years in between, he lived and worked in New York City as a professional musician.

In 1988, he was awarded a full-tuition Dean’s Scholarship to New York Law School, where he earned a J.D., magna cum laude, in 1991. He graduated in the top 3% of his law school class, was an editor of the Law Review, won American Jurisprudence awards in Civil Procedure and Legal Writing, won a faculty prize for excellence in Poverty Law and Civil Rights and was a teaching fellow (peer tutor) by faculty appointment.

After law school, Steve joined the preeminent law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP as a litigation associate in their New York office. In addition to general corporate litigation, his practice focused on intellectual property and entertainment litigation. He was one of two trial attorneys representing Sony Music Entertainment, Inc. and Michael Bolton at the copyright infringement trial of Three Boys Music (the Isley Brothers) v. Bolton et al.

Steve also served as Senior Director of Litigation (NY) for Universal Music Group, managing litigation for eastern and midwestern region, such as royalty, contract, licensing, employment, trademark/domain name and copyright infringement. He also acted as legal advisor to numerous Business Affairs and A&R executives at UMG’s labels, such as Interscope, Def Jam, Motown and A&M.

After moving to the Chicago area in 2002, Steve served as Special Counsel in the Intellectual Property department of Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, where he counseled clients, prepared contracts and conducted litigation in the areas of trademark and copyright law, before starting his own law practice in 2005.
